Commemoration of the Section's 50th Anniversary

On March 27, 1963, Section President C. Martin Duke called together fourteen past presidents of the Los Angeles Section of ASCE to discuss alternatives for commemorating the founding of the section. Wallace L. Chadwick was asked to prepare ideas for development into a program to be carried out by the regular officers and committees. The Section program committees, under the chairmanship of Jack W. Pearce, worked together for the following year to develop the programs. During this time, the 50th Anniversary Observance Committee was formed, which was comprised of the following members:

Wallace L. Chadwick Honorary Chairman, Director, District 11, ASCE
Jack W. Pierce General Chairman, Past President, Los Angeles Section
Norman B. Hume President, Los Angeles Section
C. Martin Duke Past President, Los Angeles Section
George W. Adrian Secretary, Los Angeles Section
Walter H. Cates Chairman, Financial Committee
Robert Chieruzzi Chairman, Engineering Education Committee
Robert Y.D. Chun Chairman, Publication Committee
Pearce Godley Chairman, Reception Committee
Edward A. LaBahn Chairman, Public Relations and Publicity Committee
John D. Parkhurst Chairman, Program Committee
Arthur G. Pickett Chairman, Student Activities Committee
Joseph Siegel Chairman, Arrangements Committee
James W. McWee President, Associate Member Forum

Also appointed at that time was the 50th Anniversary Publication Sub-Committee, whose charge was to publish a pamphlet recording the commemoration activities. The following persons served on the committee:

Robert Y.D. Chun Chairman of Publications Committee
Roger E. Stephenson Vice Chairman of Publications Committee
LeVal Lund Advisor to Publications Committee
Kenneth Richard Putnam
Richard A. Harris
Barry R. Schilberg Layout Artist

The observance programs developed by the committees resulted in the commemoration being carried out in three stages:

          (1) A general evening meeting on the anniversary date in December, 1963;

          (2) An evening meeting for high school students and their counsellors in March, 1964, and

          (3) An all-day meeting in May, 1964.

The general meeting in December, 1963, was convened under President Duke's administration, and the latter two under that of President Norman B. Hume.

The following Table of Contents, scanned from the 50th Annivarsary pamphlet, gives an overview of the activities comprising the commemoration. A CD containing scanned images of each page of the pamphlet is available upon request by sending an email to the History & Heritage webmaster from the Homepage of this site.
